PB&J, MT&LSP, and Other Great Combinations

In America, kids grow up on a PB&J sandwich.  It’s simple math really, Peanut Butter: good.  Jelly: good.  Put them together? You’ve got a delicious, easy combination to stick in a brown paper bag and send your kid on their way.  Plus, it’s good for you! You’ve got some protein, some fruit, and some grains from the bread, it’s just a perfect combination.  There are a lot of great combinations out there in the world; Mac&Cheese, chips&dip, cookies and milk.

Ok, now that I’ve got you hungry, where am I going with this?

Not all great combinations are made of food.  Like Machine Translation and Language Service Providers.  Now I know what you’re thinking - Machine Translation? Haven’t we heard so much about why not to use that?  But Machine Translation does have its benefits.  MT is faster, cheaper, and easy to use.

But the downfalls of MT can outweigh the benefits, like when you eat a hunk of peanut butter and it gets stuck to the roof of your mouth.  MT can make mistakes, mixing up homonyms and idioms, and possibly offending the target audience with an unknown slang term.

So, why not wash the peanut butter down with a tall glass of milk?  That’s what an LSP can do.  You can get the benefits of Machine Translation, and then have a professional translator proofread and edit the document, finding any mistakes the MT made, and localizing your idioms and slang so that the target audience gets the message—not just the words.

Here at Lionbridge onDemand, we offer a variety of options for you to choose from to get the best fit for your translation needs.  Some people don’t like jelly.  A lot of people are allergic to peanut butter.  If you want a combination with the best of both worlds, MT&LSP might be for you.  Whatever you decide, you can explore our options here.
