Connectors for the Common Man

Our “Common Man” blog series is committed to bringing you the most easy-to-digest information on translation industry topics and technologies. Previously, we addressed CMS platforms and gave an overview of how to pick the best CMS for your company. Then, we took a look at APIs and how they configure into the picture.

This week, we will build off of our CMS and API knowledge and tackle something new – connectors (specifically, we will highlight Lionbridge’s connector, Clay Tablet).

Without further ado, let’s dive in!

What is a Connector?

A connector is software which streamlines the process of translating content located in a CMS. It configures and downloads into the CMS like a plug-in.

Each connector is configured to one or more CMS platforms to make it easy to transfer CMS content to a language service provider for translation. Some connectors are configured to several CMSs; conversely, if a larger company works off of 5 or 6 CMS platforms, they may need several connectors to fit their necessities.

Why Use a Connector?

If you use a CMS – which, as we established, most companies do – it may be a good idea to invest in a connector.  The traditional (read: “old school”) method of exporting content for translation is to copy and paste all applicable matter and send for translation, however that may be. In this instance, clients may be sending a slew of text documents for translation which, upon completion of the project, need to be reintegrated into the CMS. It can be a quite a time-consuming and frustrating process.

A connector streamlines the translation significantly and decreases the errors that may arise during the traditional method of CMS translation. It also gives a company the option to localize languages differently according to specific needs.

So, say you are a large e-commerce company who uses Sitecore as your CMS platform, and you require the translation of your website into German and Japanese. BUT, there's a catch – you have a strict deadline for translation completion and you need your German site to look different than your Japanese site per marketing’s specifications. In this instance, a connector would absolutely be the right solution for you.
